Azerbaijan maintains modernization of BTR-70 and BRDM-2

“Agregat” Production Union of the Ministry of Defence Industry has specialized in modernization of Soviet-made BTR-60, BTR-70 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and BRDM-2 armoured reconnaissance-patrol vehicles.

This was told to AzeriDefence.com at MODIAR

Since 2008, the enterprise has been implementing various projects on modernization above-mentioned vehicles for Azerbaijani Armed Forces. Presently, it reviews the possibilities of modernizing BTR-70 and BRDM-2 vehicles for a number of countries. According to the director of “Agregat” Production Enterprise Farhad Jafarguliyev, after the modernization of Baku Instrument Engineering Plant within the structure of the ministry, the capabilities of both of cars were expanded, manoeuvring and control were improved.

The director of the enterprise said that, as a result of the modernization 140 hp GAZ-41 petrol engine of the vehicle indexed as BRDM-2M has been substituted by a new 156.4 hp D-245.30E2 diesel engine. Fuel consumption was also reduced. The consumption makes 29 litres per hour, while it was 35 litres of fuel per hour before the modernization. Maximal speed of the vehicle rose from 95 to 100 kmph and rollout was raised for 750 to 960 km. During modernization all units and systems were fully renewed, some changes were made on transmission, a door was installed on the side. We can install any module on the vehicle as customer requests.
Speaking about BTR-70 modernization project at Baku Instrument Engineering Plant, F. Jafarguliyev said that BTR-70 are still being used by several countries. Basic variant of these armoured vehicles is operated by two GAZ-53 engines with carburettor and this creates problems to the user: “Firstly, steering with such engines is so complicated. If one of the engines is ran off, another will not operate, too. Secondly, with two engines BTR-70 consumes 73-80 litres of fuel per hour. Within our project, the engine, transmission and internal systems of BTR are being renewed.

This vehicle was supplied with 240 hp KAMAZ-740.11.240 engine. Manoeuvring capabilities of the vehicle raised significantly, steering became easier, heating of the engine was prevented. Rollout of the vehicle was raised up to 550 km and new air ventilation system was installed inside the vehicle. In the cold weather, the cabin of the vehicle is heated with the heat of engine. Generally, comfortable conditions were created within the vehicle”. According to the head of the enterprise, BTR-70 and BRDM-2 vehicles modernized at Azerbaijan have a lot of advantages in comparison with analogues in some neighbour countries. As a result of modernization, according to customer’s request a command, sanitary, fire extinguishing and chemical versions of BTR-70 can be manufactured.
